What causes DVD-R to get disc errors when trying to format? - samsung dvd recorder & vcr best copier

I have a fairly new Samsung DVD recorder / VCR. I met some old TDK 4x DVD-R in the package. When I brought my recorder for the recording format, I get a disk error and can not format the message. Has anyone any idea? I know that the hard drive is not used, because the package has been closed. I have about 10 discs and all received the same error message.
